Born to the head of one of the six clans that made up the high council of witches, certain things were expected of her before she was even old enough to talk. One of these things was to be a great witch. It was to show a talent for magic above and beyond that of the common folk. However, when Astrea’s powers were assessed it was determined she was unremarkable. She could only perform basic magic and barely so. The girl was a disappointment to her father had had ambitions for his heir apparent. But, a child that couldn’t barely do magic was of no use to him.
He endured the girl for as long as he could. He wouldn’t look at her and she spent most of her early years of life alone among her own people. She spent most of her childhood among the slaves and peasants no being accepted by the higher classes. It formed a bond with those who were treated as lesser in society. She got to see first hand the corruption of her own people and wanted nothing more to end it. But, without title or power she could do nothing.
It would all change one day when her father decided that he wanted to get rid of his embarrassment. He abandoned the girl in the woods to die. Hoping that one of the many creatures would devour her or she would die from starvation unable to take care of herself. This would not be the case. She would thrive out there alone as her powers would develop by need. It was there that she would meet the witch god Sindri, patron god of the Morgan Clan, the very clan she had come from. Astrea took the name Devry after being cast out of her own clan. He realized the potential within the girl and began to help her. He realized that she wasn’t a talent fewer twits like her father believed. But, a prodigy who couldn’t learn magic the way that they taught it. She needed a different way. It was almost instinctual for her after that and she flew through her training with him.
Returning home she decided to demand the test from the council. The test would determine her place within the witch world. Her father was surprised when his daughter returned having believed she perished in the woods. He didn’t believe she had any power and as such he simply wanted to be rid of the troublesome child. She was only sixteen years old at the time and most the time they wanted you to be older before taking the leadership test, but under her father’s insistence they agreed. He decided to give her a test so hard she would be guaranteed to die. He didn’t want anyone to know his daughter had no power and as such he believed it would just look like he had high expectations for the child. She knew better as she heard the test handed out. The test could be anything the council decided and they decided to send her up against one the most terrifying creatures that dwelled with the hidden forests and to bring back its head.
She accepted the task much to the council’s surprise and set off to retrieve the head. The battle wasn’t easy even for the gifted witchling. However, in the end she achieved her goal and returned with her proof of finishing her mission. Astrea entered the council chamber and rolled the head across the council table in the same motion she moved quickly as she could and killed each and every head of the small council. She told them that sometimes you have to server an arm to save the body. And with that one motion she declared herself queen of the witches. Normally, a queen would show a degree of power and be voted upon. However, she simply executed all the heads of the most powerful clans and claimed the title. She had the power to hold it but getting the support from the lesser clans might be harder.
It was here she would meet Kyrell. He was amused by her antics and swore to support her. He vowed to her that her enemies would be his enemies and he would cut down any that stood in her way. And he kept his promise. She married Sindri the man who taught her magic and became lovers with the man who helped pave her way to her goals. She moved to undo the corruption of centuries of nobility and join the clans under the rule of one moving to eliminate the idea of separate but equal. While, she didn’t always approve of Kyrell’s methods he did get the job done.
Her life would have been good if it hadn’t been for the remnants of those that opposed her rule. They claimed witches shouldn’t be ruled by one person. She found out about the plot and believed that fate would decide the outcome. She said if witches weren’t ready to embrace her dram and evolve it wasn’t her place to stop them. She made Kyrell promise not to bring her back if she died. The only things she wanted were her and Sindri’s unborn child to be spared. In witch society children are rare and even if someone is assassinated the child would be placed magically in another to be born to ensure that they don’t lose a child. However, her attackers were so afraid of her powers being passed on to another they didn’t gave her this curtsy. They killed her and the baby. When Sindri found out he begged Kyrell to bring her back but good to his word he refused.
Five hundred years have passed since Astrea last walked the world. Many things have changed over the course of witch history. She was reborn as a girl by the name of Astrea. Her father’s clan was divided after her death by those who wanted to follow her teachings and those who did not. The new clan that emerged from the division took on the same name she gave herself centuries ago becoming the Devry clan, which is currently a member of the tribunal, the three most powerful clans who make all final decisions concerning the witch society. The Morgan clan faded into nothingness as time moved on. Sindri became a recluse after her death and Kyrell went back to being head of the Giese clan and eventually was murdered by his wife while sick with the wasting sickness. He was able to return from being cursed by her and upon realizing her soul was reborn he convinced Aiyana to help him create a body for her and took a small piece of her soul, the part that held Astrea’s incarnation from the girl leaving them both weak to bring her back. She has now returned to the world somewhat different than she used to be. She has returned more vulnerable than the powerful witch queen she was. If this remains to be true has yet to be seen.
